The Beginnings Quilt Along Block 8 - Whirly Gig

Hi Everyone,

I hope your summer is going well. I have been super busy getting ready for some medical stuff and my puppy had surgery so it is like having an infant in the house. I have to feed her by hand and carry her everywhere.

If you are using your Cricut Maker to make the blocks you can find the cut file here. There are pieces from the Ohio Star block included in this so put those aside for later.

Block 8 Whirly Gig (8" Finished)

For One Block (that is what you need for the quilt)

 
Cut:
2 –  2 ½”by 6 ½” rectangles of Focus Fabric
2 –  2 ½”by 6 ½” rectangles of background fabric
2 –  2 ½”by 4 ½” rectangles of background fabric
2 –  2 ½” squares each Focus Fabric and background fabric

** all seams are ¼”
  

Instructions:

1. Mark a diagonal line on the back of each of the 2 ½” background fabric squares and the focus fabric 2 ½” squares.


2.   Place background squares on the Left side of the focus 2 ½” by 6 ½” rectangles as shown. Make sure the diagonal line goes from top right to bottom left. Repeat for second rectangle.


3.  Place focus squares on the right side of the background 2 ½” by 6 ½” rectangles as shown. Make sure the diagonal line goes from top left to bottom right. Repeat for second rectangle. 


        4.  For the rectangles in steps 2 and 3, Sew on the marked lines (not to the right or left). Trim corners and press toward the focus fabric. 









        5.  Place the units as shown. Sew center seam. 




         6.    Repeat for the last two units.
    

        7.  Place a 2 ½” by 4 ½” rectangle on the left side of the unit sewn in step 5. 




         8. Place a 2 ½” by 4 ½” rectangle on the right side of the unit sewn in step 6.


        9.  Sew the center seam and you are finished.
