Lantern Quilt Tutorial

Tuesday, September 17, 2013
Hi Everyone,

So here is the simple quilt tutorial to make this quilt (see I changed it to the actual layout of my quilt with Sunnyside)

Supplies:

1 Layer Cake (I used Sunnyside by Kate Spain) or large scraps, FQs, whatever you have
1 1/3 yds of background (I used Kona Slate because it is a perfect match for Sunnyside)

Cutting:
From each of your 42 layer cake pieces (or whatever fabrics you use):

    2 - 2 1/2" by 5 1/2" rectangles
    1 - 5 1/2" by 7 1/2" rectangle

This is how I cut it out of a layer cake piece.

From Background:

22 - 1 1/2" by Width of Fabric (WOF) strips
    Subcut 11 strips into 168 - 1 1/2" by 2 1/2" rectangles
    Subcut 11 strips into 42 - 1 1/2" by 9 1/2" rectangles

6 - 2 1/2" by WOF strips
    Subcut 21 - 2 1/2" by 9 1/2 rectangles

Piecing:

1. Chain piece the 1 1/2" by 2 1/2" background rectangles to each side of the 2 1/2" by 5 1/2" inch focal fabric rectangles. Creating pieced strips like this:

Repeat with all of these pieces. You should have 84 strip sets when finished.

2. Chain piece the strip sets from step one to the 5 1/2" by 7 1/2" rectangles. Creating this unit:

3. Using a design wall or the floor as I like to call it :) lay out your blocks in a pleasing manner. Making sure to distribute your prints and colors or whatever looks good to you :) Here is kinda what mine looked like when I had it on the wall... terrible picture but I didn't know I was going to show it to anyone LOL

4. To each side of the first, third, and fifth block in rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 add a 1 1/2" by 9 1/2" background rectangle. This creates Block 1.

5. To the right hand side of all of the other blocks add a 2 1/2" by 9 1/2" rectangle. This creates Block 2.

6. Sew your rows together alternating Block 1 and Block 2. It will look like this:

This would also be awesome with solids:

7. Quilt as desired and bind... you can even do a scrappy binding with the leftover layer cake bits or use them for a fun backing. Go crazy. Have fun.

I hope you enjoy ... just think what an easy baby quilt this would make :)

See ya tomorrow!
