I have a book called Still Crazy for Baby and it has great basic quilt instructions in the back. A couple friends that were learning to quilt have borrowed it too, it's a great beginner book.

ReplyDeleteI use a number of quilt magazines; over the past 25 or so years...love them....blogs, for the past year have done so much for me....getting me out of my comfort zone...Freshly Pieced; A Girl in Paradise....you...there are too many to mention....but I have learned so much...and still trying more....SewCal Gal has been wonderful...Leah Day....gosh; I could go on and on,
I am very new to quilting, so right now I am mostly using any quilt magazines I can get my hands on! I do have the book 'Modern Log Cabins", which has a lot of helpful information in it.

I'm so lucky to have four quilt shops close to me that I take classes at and belong to different groups. I have tons of knowledge that I can go to any of the shops and find help. If it's 10pm on a Saturday night and I need a refresher on a certain block construction, I open my book by Billie Lauder. I can't remember the name (as I'm not home now to check) but it has tips, tricks and great diagrams. I had a teacher suggest it years ago and I'm glad I have it.

ReplyDeleteI have several different books I look at - the one by Oh! Frannson! and her blog are helpful, and there are a dozen other blogs I check for tutorials on techniques. Right now I'm taking a Craftsy.com BOM class.
ReplyDeleteA favorite? There are so many great tutorials and books available it is impossible to choose a favorite. Gosh, there are great ones for applique, stitcheries, piecing, traditional, modern, and all sorts of variations. I love them all :)

Help! favourite- that is difficult. Too many of you out there. and too many different styles to have a go at! I go back to a childhood book at times- Complete book of handicrafts, but UI also have a 'quilters resource book' which is great.

There are so many blogs I reference daily for tips and inspiration, but when I was first learning how to quilt, and when I need a refresher on something, I reference the Quilting 101 posts over at Chasing Cottons. They have been very helpful for me.

ReplyDeleteI am always looking at Scrap Quilts by Judy Martin. It's an oldie but goodie. Lots of great block patterns. I also have a large collection of quilting magazines that I look to for inspiration.

ReplyDeleteI usually use Fons and Porter Basic book or a great little book titled A to Z of Quilting. If that doesn't work just bing it or google it and the answer is out there somewhere.

ReplyDeleteI kinda just dove into the whole quilting thing without much reference. I checked out a few books from the library and went from there. Now I have a whole mess of bloggers I follow. I can't say I follow just one but I guess I prefer the whole on-line quilting reference material. Videos are a life saver.
ReplyDeleteI've just made my first quilt using The Practical Guide to Patchwork: New Basics for the Modern Quiltmaker by Elizabeth Hartman, so that was my main reference plus lots of online tips:)

ReplyDeleteThere really isn't one but my favorite is Patchwork Minus Mathwork. I have used it so many times during my quilting career I can't even begin to tell you. I found it on Amamzon - was glad to see they made a revised edition - so many people have asked about mine. I may buy the new one since mine is in such rough shape.

ReplyDeleteI love the "Sew We Quilt" blog. Madame Samm arranges for quilters to give tutorials on all aspects of quilting. Ir is a valuable source of projects as well as techniques.
ReplyDeleteI have Elizabeth Hartman's book that I have referenced for basics when I was first starting this quilting journey. I have a few others too but found hers most helpful. Nowadays, the Internet and all it's bloggy goodness is my go-to for ideas. Thanks for the chance for a new book:)

ReplyDeleteThe first book I used for reference was Quilts, Quilts, Quilts. I still have it handy along with class handouts, blogs, pinned posts, etc... There is such a wealth of information out there.
ReplyDeleteI have never had a quilting book, still in the process of teaching myself how to sew and learning as I go. My fav teaching site so far though would have to be the Moda Bake shop. I love the fact that I can save the bookmark to each quilt or download a printable file. :)

I would say the Moda Bake Shop website would be what I use most for making blankets or plenty of other possibilities for gifts. I do have books, but I usually only scan through them for ideas or color schemes-I haven't made anything out of them.

ReplyDeleteIt's SO hard to name just one favorite, but I'll choose the "Patchwork Times" blog by Judy Laquidara! It's a great combo of quilty/crafty stuff and just plain ol' life. And the "life" stuff is pretty funny stuff!

Oooo, I've so many good reference books that it is hard to choose. I think, though, that the ones I open most often are Liberated Quilting (Gwen Marston) and Collaborative Quilting (Gwen Marston and Freddi Moran).
